The Bears are once again being linked to a potential big move late in free agency.
The Chicago Bears, led by general manager Ryan Poles, were aggressive early in the 2025 NFL free agency period. Now heading into the new season, the Bears look like a significantly improved team with legitimate playoff potential—if they can live up to expectations.
Since the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft, free agency activity has slowed down. However, there’s still a chance Chicago could make another move.
There are a few areas on the current roster that could use some reinforcement, and several free agents remain on the market who might be able to help. One of those positions is running back. While the Bears aren’t in a dire situation there, adding depth or a difference-maker could be beneficial if the right opportunity arises.
One name that has resurfaced in connection with the Bears is free-agent running back Nick Chubb.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Bears are one of the teams to watch when it comes to Chubb’s next destination. With the Browns drafting two new running backs, Chubb is not expected to return to Cleveland.
“He wants to play and expects to play,” Fowler noted. “The running back market is tough right now. Many of these guys are likely going to wait until training camp to sign. It doesn’t really help them to sign in late May or early June. Unless there’s an injury or a surprise move, I don’t see Chubb going back to Cleveland. A few teams could be in the market for a running back—the Commanders or Bears come to mind as potential fits.”
Chubb, once one of the most dominant backs in the NFL, is looking to bounce back after a serious knee injury in 2023 and a disappointing performance last season.
In the eight games he played during the 2024 season, Chubb logged 102 carries for 332 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 3.3 yards per attempt.
For the Bears, taking a chance on Chubb comes with minimal risk—they could easily part ways if things don’t pan out. But if he’s able to return to form two years removed from his injury, Chicago could end up with a star running back to complement rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.
While the Bears may ultimately decide not to pursue Chubb, the move would be a logical one.
