Max Verstappen issues striking remark after chaotic Monaco GP.
Max Verstappen has claimed that F1 cars can barely manage overtakes on Formula 2 cars around the streets of Monaco, highlighting the circuit’s severe lack of overtaking opportunities.
Despite a significant performance gap—pole position in Formula 1 is typically around 11 seconds faster than in Formula 2—Monaco’s tight layout continues to hinder racing action.
Verstappen finished the Grand Prix in fourth place, making his second mandatory pit stop just before the final lap. In the closing stages, he was pursued by Lando Norris, who had much fresher tyres but was still unable to get close enough to attempt a pass.
This year, Formula 1 introduced a new rule at Monaco requiring two pit stops in hopes of spicing up the race. However, the change did little to enhance the on-track spectacle.
“You can’t race here anyway, so it doesn’t matter if you do one stop or ten,” Verstappen told Sky F1.
“Even when I was leading at the end with completely worn-out tyres, it was still impossible to overtake.
“With today’s F1 cars, you’d barely be able to pass a Formula 2 car around here.
“I understand the intention, but I don’t think the changes made any real difference.”
Verstappen also took a humorous swipe at the gimmicks, comparing the race to a video game.
“Honestly, it felt like we were playing Mario Kart!” he joked.
“Maybe we should add some features to the cars—start throwing bananas and make the track slippery.”
